Facebook Page vs profile vs group: what you can schedule, and why
By PublishBuddy TeamUpdated on 4 min read
Short answer
Scheduling tools can only post to Facebook Pages. Meta stopped apps from posting to personal profiles in 2018 and to groups on April 22, 2024. Group admins and moderators can still schedule group posts inside Facebook itself.
Key points
- Pages: any scheduling tool that supports Facebook can post text, links, photos, videos, Reels and Stories.
- Personal profiles: no app can post to them. Meta removed that permission on August 1, 2018.
- Groups: apps lost access when Meta removed the Groups API on April 22, 2024. Admins and moderators can still schedule inside the group.
- Professional mode doesn't change this. It's still a personal profile.
- Only have a profile? Create a free Page for the posts you want to schedule.
"Why can't I schedule to my Facebook profile?" is one of the most common questions about any social media scheduler. The short version: Facebook has three places to post, and apps can only reach one of them.
The three places, side by side
| Facebook Page | Personal profile | Facebook group | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Can scheduling apps post to it? | Yes | No, since 2018 | No, since April 22, 2024 |
| Meta's own scheduling | Meta Business Suite | Not in Business Suite | In the group, for admins and moderators |
| PublishBuddy | Posts, Reels and Stories | No | No |
The dates come from Meta's developer changelog and help center, read on October 25, 2026. Sources are at the end.
Pages: the one apps can post to
A Page is a public presence for a business, brand, creator or cause. It's separate from your personal profile, and you manage it from your profile with a Page role.
Meta's Pages API lets apps publish to Pages on your behalf. That covers text and link posts, photos, posts with several photos, videos, Reels and Stories. Every scheduling tool that supports Facebook is using this.
Meta's own tool, Meta Business Suite, can also schedule Page posts, from 20 minutes to 29 days ahead.
In PublishBuddy, you connect Pages on any plan, and each Page counts as one social account:
- Posts can be text only, a link with a preview, one or more images, or one video. You can't mix photos and a video in one Facebook post.
- Reels take one video. The text becomes the Reel's description.
- Stories take one image or video, and go out without a caption.
- Text and link posts can carry a call-to-action button, like Shop Now or Call Now.
- On Pro and Business, follow-up comments can add a link or an image under a post or Reel after it goes live.
To connect, you log in to Facebook as yourself, and Facebook shows PublishBuddy the Pages you manage. Tick every Page you want when Facebook asks. See Connect a Facebook Page.
Personal profiles: closed to apps since 2018
On April 24, 2018, Meta announced a set of platform and policy changes. One of them retired publish_actions, the permission that let apps post to Facebook as the logged-in person. Apps created after that day never got it. Apps that already had it lost it on August 1, 2018. Meta said at the time that roughly 60,000 apps would lose it. A few got extensions, the last ending in February 2020.
Today Meta's API has no way to create a post on a person's feed. So no scheduler can post to your personal profile. If a tool offers profile "scheduling," it can only remind you to post it yourself.
Meta's own scheduler doesn't cover profiles either. Business Suite posts to Pages, Instagram accounts and groups.
What about professional mode?
Professional mode adds professional tools to your personal profile. It doesn't create a new profile. Meta's publishing APIs still only cover Pages, and Meta's help center says Business Suite "isn't compatible with pro mode". For scheduling, a profile in professional mode is still a profile.
Groups: closed to apps since April 2024
Apps used to be able to post into groups through Meta's Groups API. Meta deprecated it in Graph API version 19.0, released January 23, 2024, and removed it from every version on April 22, 2024. Since then, outside tools can't post to Facebook groups.
You can still schedule group posts inside Facebook, if you're an admin or moderator:
- On a computer: start writing a post in the group, click the calendar icon next to Post, pick the date and time, then click Schedule.
- In the Facebook app: start writing, tap Schedule, turn on the toggle and pick a time.
- The option only shows for admins and moderators, and only once they start typing.
- Find scheduled posts under Admin tools, then Scheduled posts.
- Admins can also set up recurring posts, daily, weekly or monthly, with Admin Assist.
Meta Business Suite on a computer also lists Facebook groups as a place to post.
Which one should your posts go to?
If you post for a business, a brand, clients or a growing audience, use a Page. It's the only one of the three you can schedule with outside tools.
If you only have a profile, create a Page. It's free and takes a few minutes in Facebook. Then connect the Page to your scheduler.
If your community lives in a group, schedule group posts in Facebook itself. Run the Page from your scheduler and share Page posts into the group when they fit.

Frequently asked questions
Why can't I schedule posts to my personal Facebook profile?
Meta doesn't let apps post as a person. It announced the change on April 24, 2018, and apps lost the permission they used, publish_actions, on August 1, 2018. Since then no scheduling tool can post to a personal profile.
Can I schedule posts in a Facebook group?
Yes, inside Facebook, if you're an admin or moderator of the group. Start writing a post, then click the calendar icon next to Post on a computer, or tap Schedule in the app. Outside tools can't post to groups since Meta removed the Groups API on April 22, 2024.
Does professional mode let tools post to my profile?
No. Professional mode adds creator tools to your personal profile, but it's still a profile. Meta's publishing APIs only cover Pages, and Meta Business Suite doesn't work with professional mode.
What can I schedule to a Facebook Page?
Text posts, links with a preview, photos, videos, Reels and Stories. In PublishBuddy, a Page post can be text, a link, images or one video. A Reel takes one video, and a Story takes one image or video with no caption.
How far ahead can I schedule a Facebook Page post in Meta Business Suite?
Meta's help center says Business Suite schedules Page posts from 20 minutes to 29 days ahead.
