What an AI agent for social media can do, and what it can't

By PublishBuddy TeamUpdated on 5 min read

Short answer

An AI agent for social media is a chat assistant that can look things up in your accounts and act on them. PublishBuddy's AI Agent answers questions from your own post data, plans and writes posts, and schedules them once you confirm. It won't post without asking, and it can't reply to comments or change a post that's already live.

Key points

  • An agent can read your accounts and take actions, like saving drafts or scheduling. A writing tool only hands you text.
  • Good jobs for it: your numbers in plain English, what made your best posts work, and a week of drafts.
  • It saves drafts on its own and asks before it schedules, publishes, edits or deletes anything.
  • It can't reply to comments, change posts that are already out, or touch your account connections and settings.
  • Chatting is free on Pro and Business. Writing tasks cost 1 AI credit, and images and videos cost what AI Studio charges.

An agent is not a writing tool

Most "AI for social media" features are writing tools. You give them a topic, they give you a caption, and the rest of the work is still yours. You copy it, open the scheduler, pick a time and check your numbers somewhere else.

An agent can do the steps around the writing. It looks things up in your accounts, saves posts, moves them and schedules them. You talk to it in plain English, the way you'd brief a colleague.

That's also why the limits matter more. A tool that can schedule posts can schedule the wrong one. So the useful question isn't "how smart is it?" It's "what will it do on its own, and what does it ask me about first?"

What PublishBuddy's AI Agent is good at

The AI Agent is a chat inside PublishBuddy that knows your workspace. Before you ask, pick which accounts it works with from the row of avatars at the top. Pick none, and questions like "what are my top posts?" cover all of them.

Answering questions from your own numbers

Ask it what you'd otherwise dig through reports for:

  • "How did my Instagram posts do this month compared with last month?"
  • "Which posts did best in the last 30 days, and what did they have in common?"
  • "What's scheduled for next week, and is anything stuck in drafts or waiting for approval?"
  • "Did anything fail to publish last week?"

It can also explain what held a weak post back. And it can find an old post by what's in its image, like a color, an object or words.

Planning and writing posts

  • Post ideas, captions and hashtags, or a better version of a caption you paste in.
  • A plan for next week. Each answer plans up to three accounts.
  • One post per network from a long piece of text, each kept within that network's length limit.
  • A new post in the style of one that did well, or a rewrite of one that didn't.

When it writes a post, it saves it as a draft. It can save one draft per account you picked, up to 20 at once. You'll find them under Drafts on the Posts page, like any draft you made yourself.

Scheduling, with your OK

It can schedule a post, add it to your queue or publish it now. It can move a post to a new time or take it off the schedule. And it can edit, delete or retry a post that hasn't gone out yet.

Before any of that, it shows a confirmation card: the account, the post, a preview of how it will look and the time. You click Confirm, Cancel or Edit first, which opens the post in the composer. A card that sits for about five minutes expires, and you can ask for a fresh one.

Making images and short videos

It can make images and short videos with AI Studio's models. The card shows the model and the price in credits before anything is made, and a cheaper model when one would do the job. Finished files land in the AI Studio folder of your Media Library.

Reading what you share

Attach up to four images or text files, or paste a link. "Turn this blog post into a LinkedIn post" works because it reads the page at the link.

It also remembers how you like things. Tell it once that you don't want emoji, and it keeps to that in later chats.

What it can't do

These limits are deliberate. Each one keeps a mistake from reaching your followers.

  • Post without asking. Drafts are the only thing it saves on its own. Nothing goes out until you confirm.
  • Change a post that's already out. It can't edit or delete published posts.
  • Reply to comments. That's what Engage, the comment inbox, is for.
  • Touch your setup. It can't connect, reconnect or remove accounts, or change your settings or plan.
  • Reach past your access. It only works in the workspace you're in, and a team member's Agent only sees the accounts that person was given. If your posts need approval, it saves a draft and tells you to ask an admin.

What it costs

The AI Agent is on Pro ($29 a month) and Business ($49 a month), and in the 14-day trial. Most of what it does is free:

What you ask forCredits
Chatting, questions about your numbers, schedulingFree
Post ideas, a caption, hashtags or an improved caption1 each time
A lookup of your best or worst posts1, or none if it finds nothing
An image or a videoThe AI Studio price, shown before you confirm

Pro includes 500 AI credits a month and Business 2,500. The trial comes with 200. Free messages still count toward a limit of 60 AI requests an hour, shared with AI Assist and the Ideas page. See How AI credits work.

How to get better answers

  • Pick the accounts first. "Plan next week" means something different for one LinkedIn page than for six accounts.
  • Set up a Brand Kit. The Agent writes in your brand's voice when every account you picked shares the same kit.
  • Ask for what you'd ask a person. "Three LinkedIn posts for next week about our new pricing, one with a question for comments" beats "write some posts."
  • Read the drafts. They're drafts for a reason. Check facts, names and prices before you confirm a schedule.

Prefer to work from Claude Code or Cursor?

The same account works outside PublishBuddy too. Its MCP server lets Claude Code, Cursor and other MCP tools read your posts and numbers and schedule new ones. A new post there starts as a draft as well, and scheduling is a separate step your tool asks you about first. See How to schedule social media posts from Claude Code or Cursor.

Frequently asked questions

Can an AI agent post to my social media without asking?

PublishBuddy's can't. It saves drafts on its own, because a draft never goes out by itself. Scheduling, publishing, editing, deleting and making images or videos all wait for you to click Confirm on a card that shows exactly what will happen.

Does the AI Agent write in my brand voice?

Yes, if you set up a Brand Kit and assign it to your accounts. The Agent uses it when every account you picked shares the same kit. Without one, it writes in a neutral voice and follows any tone you ask for in the chat. It also remembers preferences like language, emoji and hashtags for later chats.

Which plans include the AI Agent?

Pro ($29 a month, 500 AI credits) and Business ($49 a month, 2,500 AI credits). The 14-day free trial includes it too, with 200 credits. The Free plan doesn't.

Can the AI Agent reply to comments?

No. Comment replies happen in Engage, PublishBuddy's comment inbox, which is on Pro and Business.

Can I use PublishBuddy from Claude Code or Cursor instead?

Yes. PublishBuddy's MCP server lets Claude Code, Cursor and other MCP clients that accept an API token read your posts and schedule new ones. It's on Pro and Business. ChatGPT and Claude can connect too: they sign in with OAuth, so there's no token to copy.
